Hyssop

The Scriptures refer to Hyssop as an oil of purification.

Ps 51:3 (1); God in your grace, have mercy on me; in your great compassion, blot out my crimes.

Ps 51:9-12 (7-10); Purge me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
Fill me with joy and gladness, so that the bones you crushed can rejoice.
Turn away your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities.
Create in me a pure heart, God; and a steadfast spirit renew within me.

The Passover is the story of the Exodus from Egypt (bondage/slavery). As per God's instructions, Exodus 12:22, tells us, that during the Passover, the Israelites dipped the bunch of hyssop in the basin of the lambs blood, then struck (releasing its aromatic oils along with the blood), they struck the lintel and two side-posts of their doorways, as a protection from the angel of death.

The deliverance from Egypt (bondage) is not only from physical, but also from spiritual slavery. To be freed from all pagan influences and consecrated to the service of God.

I Cor 5:7b; For our Passover Lamb, the Messiah, has been sacrificed.
So let us celebrate the Festival of Passover not with old leaven,
nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness,
but with the matzah (un-leaven bread) of purity and truth.

Passover is intended to keep the memory of the wonderful deliverance alive in the doorpost of our minds and hearts.

The Hebrew word “Pesach”,means, to Passover, in the sense of not only passing over, but also to spare and protect.

The Exodus from Egypt (bondage/slavery) is not only one of the greatest events in the history of the Jewish people, but one of the greatest events in the history of the world.

Upon further examination of the Paschal Lamb of the Exodus (Ex 12:22), and that of the Lamb of God, (Jn 1:29.) Many parallels can readily be seen throughout Scripture.

     Ex 12:1-2; The LORD spoke to Moshe (Moses) and Aharon (Aaron) in the land of Egypt (bondage);
HE said, “You are to begin your calendar with this month; it will be the first month of the year for you."

“This Month”, The month of Aviv in which the deliverance was about to take place. The month of our freedom, so that we will reckon, calculate the determined reference to a fixed basis, from the time of the hour of our freedom, our redemption. The Exodus was to mark the beginning of a new era. Just as our Exodus within the pages of the Newest Testament also give revelation, marking/signaling the time of the hour of our freedom, which marks the beginning of a new era.

In Temple times,

1-  The paschal lamb was chosen on the 10th day of this month of Aviv (March/April). Ex 12:3

To calculate the day that Yeshua triumphantly came into Jerusalem, see Mt 26:2, Mk 14:1, these verses tell us that the Passover is “two days away”. Therefore setting the date to be Aviv 11. They are speaking this passage on the 11, therefore not counting the 11, but rather Passover is two days away, hence Aviv 12 and 13th. Passover is Aviv 14, when Aviv 13 ends at sundown, it is now the beginning of Aviv 14. Bear in mind that the new day begins at evening (Gen 1). Going backward in the previous passages, paying close attention to where they spent the night and arising in the morning, we are now able to determine/reckon times and significant dates.

(Aviv 10) Mk 11:7-10 and Mt 21:7-11, They brought the colt (donkey) to Yeshua and threw their robes on it, and he sat on it. Many people carpeted the road with their clothing, while others cut branches from trees and spread them on the road. Those who were ahead and those behind shouted,

     “Please, Deliver us!"

"Blessed is he who comes in the name of The LORD!"

"Blessed is the coming Kingdom of our father David, that comes in the name of The LORD!"

“You in the highest heaven! Please, Deliver us!”

2-  The paschal lamb was to be without blemish, faultless. (Examined from the 10th to the 13th of Aviv). If found with blemish, it was disqualified and could not be sacrificed. Ex 12:5

(Aviv 10 to the 13th), we see Yeshua teaching in the Temple everyday. Being questioned and examined. No guile was found in him. (Mt 21:12 – Mt 26:64, Mk 11:12 – Mk 15:1, Lk 19:39 – Lk 22:71, Jn 12:20 – Jn 18:28.)

3-  The paschal lamb was sacrificed towards the evening, of the 13th between the ninth to the eleventh hour
     (3 to 5 pm). Ex 12:6
Towards the evening refers to, in the afternoon when the heat of the sun begins to decrease, about 3 o'clock.

(Aviv 13) Luke 23:44-45; It was now about the sixth hour (noon), and darkness covered the whole land until the
ninth hour (3 o'clock). And the sun was darkened, and the veil (curtain) in the Temple was split down the middle.
Crying out with a loud voice, Yeshua said, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” With these words he gave
     up his spirit. ( Ps 31:6 (5)
)

4-  The paschal lamb was not to be dismembered (no separated or broken bones). Ex 12:9

Jn 19:31b -34; They asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies removed.
The soldiers came and broke the legs of the other one; but when they got to Yeshua
and saw that he was already dead, they didn't break his legs.

5-  Moshe was chosen by God to lead the Israelites out of Egypt (bondage), to serve God.
Yeshua was chosen by God to redeem and lead the world out of bondage (from a worthless way of life), to serve God.

John 1: 17; The Torah (God's eternal teaching) was given through Moshe,
Grace (favor) and truth came through Yeshua the Messiah.

Dt 18:15-19; The LORD will raise up for you a prophet like me (a prophet like Moses) from among yourselves,
from your own kinsmen (Israelite). You are to pay attention to him, just as when you were assembled at Horev
and requested the LORD your God, 'Don't let me hear the voice of the LORD my God any more, or let me see
this great fire ever again; if I do, I will die!' On that occasion the LORD said to me, “They are right in what they
are saying, I will raise up for them a prophet like you (Moshe) from among their kinsmen (Israelite).
I will put MY words in his (Messiah) mouth, and he will tell them everything I order him.
Whoever doesn't listen to MY words, which he (Messiah – the Anointed One of God) will speak in MY NAME,
will have to account for himself to ME.

Grace, Truth and the Torah are all from God, supreme expressions of who HE is.

6-  The children of Israel were led through the sea, they walked on dry land (Ex 14:21-22).
And when they crossed over, they sang to the LORD

(Ex 15) “I will sing to the LORD, for HE is highly exalted: the horse and its rider HE through into the sea.

Revelation 15:2-4, I saw what looked like a sea of glass mixed with fire. Those defeating the beast, its image and
the number of its name were standing by the sea of glass, holding harps which God had given them.

They were singing the song of Moshe, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb:

"Great and marvelous are Your works, LORD God Almighty! Just and true are Your ways, King of the saints!"

Like the song of Moshe, the song of the Lamb exults in the just ways of God.

The book of Revelation (unveiling), and the book of Exodus bear many similarities.
At the end of the last age, a second and greater Exodus will occur.

Jer 16:14-15; Therefore, says the LORD, the day will come when people will no longer swear, “As the LORD
lives, who brought the people of Israel out of the land of Egypt”, but, “As the LORD lives, who brought
     the people of Israel out of the land of the north (hidden) and out of all the countries where HE drove them”;
for I will bring them back to their own land, which I gave to their ancestors.

Jer 16:19-21; The LORD, my strength, my fortress, my refuge in time of trouble, the nations will come to You
from the ends of the earth, saying,

“Our ancestors inherited nothing but lies, futile idols, completely useless.”
Can a person make himself gods? (In fact they aren't gods at all.)

Therefore, I will make them know, once and for all, I will make them know MY power and MY might.
Then they will know that MY NAME is YHVH (The LORD).

Ex 14:30-31; On that day, the LORD saved Israel from the Egyptians; Israel saw the Egyptians dead
on the shore. When Israel saw the mighty deed that the LORD had performed against the Egyptians,
the people feared the LORD, and they believed in the LORD and in HIS servant Moshe.

     (Day of the LORD)
Revelation 15:3b -4; Great and wonderful are the things you have done, LORD, God of heaven's armies!
Just and true are Your ways, King of the nations!
LORD, who will not fear and glorify Your NAME? Because You alone are Holy.
All nations will come and worship before You, for Your righteous deeds have been revealed.

7–  Ex 12:14; “This will be a day for you to remember and celebrate a festival to The LORD; from generation
to generation you are to celebrate it by a perpetual regulation."

Sha'ul (Paul) encourages us to not let anyone pass judgment on us for partaking in these appointed times of God (Lev 23).
For these are shadows of things to come and is the body of Messiah (Col 2:16-17, I Cor 5:7).

The Passover Seder (order of service) reflects God's order for how to proceed from spiritual slavery to spiritual freedom.

The first step in spiritual growth is to want to live a holy life. This is expressed through Sanctification, through committing ourselves to holiness defined by God's verdict. Holiness has two aspects: Moving away from what in not holy, and moving toward what is holy. God created humankind with free will; He did so, in order to give us the ability to be conscious recipients. Holiness requires the consciousness of God and a dedication to God.

Knowledge Vs. Wisdom

In the Garden of Eden, the word of the snake (twisted, corrupt) prevailed over the word of God. The allure of the forbidden fruit became irresistible to Eve. What a bitter irony in her seeing that "it was good".

During the creation process, God had repeatedly said that things were good. Now the whole idea of what is good had become debased in the human mind. "Good" is no longer defined by God's verdict as the Creator, but by the senses and utilitarian values of a human being, the creation.

At that moment, man changes the representation of the tree of knowledge to a twisted and perverted form of knowledge. Good and evil become concepts defined by the senses of men, rather than being dependant on the will of God.

The Tree of Life was in the middle of the garden, in the very center and heart of the garden, just as a human heart is center in the body. The heart distributes life-sustaining blood to the entire body. This is also true of God's Word, (God's wisdom, God's instructions), which the Tree of Life represents, with regard to our spiritual body and its nourishment. Proverbs states the Torah (God's Word) is a Tree of Life for all those who grasp it.

It is in I Cor 15:21-22, that tells us, “For since death came through a man, also the resurrection of the dead has come though a man. For just as in connection with Adam all die, so in connection with the Messiah all will be made alive”.

Alive is referring to restoring our relationship with God. Not the physical body being alive, as we are physically alive now, but lack true relationship with God, we see with dim eyes. But once, all things are restored, in there order, we will see clearly, and be Alive with a renewed relationship. We are given victory through our Lord Yeshua the Messiah, “that death is swallowed up in victory (Is 25:8, I Cor 15:54-55),” by a renewed relationship with God. Our eyes will be opened with proper sight, through the Tree of Life, which is by God's verdict of proper knowledge, rather than the tree of knowledge of good and evil (dim eyes).

The Hebrew phase “to open the eyes” is exclusively employed in the figurative sense of receiving new source of knowledge, not that of regaining the sense of sight.

Far higher are God's ways manifest in the hearts and souls of men.

     Proverbs 3:13-18; Happy the person who finds wisdom, the person who acquires understanding;
for her profit exceeds that of silver, gaining her is better than gold, she is more precious than pearls,
nothing you want can compare with her. Long life is in her right hand, riches and honor is her left.
Her ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace.
She is a tree of life to those who grasp her; whoever holds fast to her will be made happy.

Mark 11, It was the Passover season, just a few days before Yeshua went to the Tzlav (Cross).
Yeshua curses a fig tree, that through which sin entered the world; a fig tree (Gen 3:7), symbolic of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, gained apart from God's Torah (wisdom/instruction). In so doing, Yeshua intercepts man's quest to obtain knowledge, first by asserting that knowledge is but the Torah's handmaiden “Proverbs. 1:7; the fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge”, and second by redirecting our journey to knowledge, only via the Tree of Life, “Proverbs 2:6; For the LORD gives wisdom; from His mouth comes knowledge and understanding”. “Proverbs 3:7; Don't be conceited about your own wisdom; but fear the LORD, and turn from evil”.

Yeshua is directing us to move away from the things that hold us in bondage (Egypt), and to move toward a disciplined godly lifestyle, moving toward God.

In Mt 4; after Yeshua was immersed, he went into the desert, and was tested by the Adversary (the one who opposes God); Yeshua's defense (as should be ours) was God's Torah (God's wisdom, instruction). Surely, the students (believers) are not greater than the Teacher (Yeshua).
The Adversary twisted and misused God's Word, whereas Yeshua gave correct rendering of God's Word.

The serpent or snake is so name in the Hebrew language ( na'chaysh, one who practices sorcery), Hence, the snake twist as it moves along, its ways are crooked, corrupt, twisted and perverted.

The Psalmist declares in chapter 1;
How blessed are those who reject the advice of the wicked, don't stand on the way of sinners or sit where
scoffers sit! Their delight is in the LORD's Torah; on HIS Torah they meditate day and night. They are like trees
planted by streams, they bear their fruit in season, their leaves never wither, everything they do succeeds."

Yeshua states in Mt 24:12 about the end of this age (the last two thousand years);
“many people's love will grow cold because of increased distance from Torah. (distant from God's wisdom and      instruction)”.

The Hebraic understanding of Torah is not the common western thought, the law! Rather, Hebraic thought is, Torah is God's wisdom, God's instruction. It is impossible to abolish God's wisdom. For it was through HIS Wisdom that all things came to be (John 1). It is by God's grace, that He gave us His Torah (His wisdom, His instruction). It is by God's grace that He gave us a means of atonement for our sins, our worthless way of life.

By Yeshua cursing the fig tree, he is teaching us to turn away from our old nature, and turn toward a new nature directed and defined by God's verdict as Creator.

By which,
(Quoted from CJBC), God's Torah is then written on our hearts. The path to holiness commences with trusting God and His Son* Yeshua, and following this path is a process, not an instantaneous event, believers do not suddenly become perfect. A genuine follower of Yeshua will have an inner desire to please God; so that as one understands more and more of what God wants and expects from them, he/she will be increasingly prepared and empowered by the Holy Spirit to do it (James 2:18). On the other hand, a professed follower of Yeshua still has free will and can resist “the finger of God” writing on his/her heart. Some have acted against Jews have called themselves Christians but in fact have been unbelievers; while others have been believers who resisted God's will. None of this negates God's action (compare Rom 3:3-4), which He has been accomplishing according to the terms of the Newest Covenant ever since Yeshua inaugurated it, of writing His (God's) Torah on the hearts of any willing person, Jewish or non-Jewish, who puts his trust in Yeshua the Messiah.

The Newest Covenant has been given as Torah (Hebrews 8:6). This is virtually unknown theological truth of far-reaching importance. First, although there are many, both Jews and Christians, who suppose that the Newest Testament abrogated the Torah, the Newest Testament here explicitly states that it has itself been given as Torah. Obviously, if the Newest Testament is Torah, then the Torah has not been abrogated. Instead, the Newest Testament has been given the same status as the Torah of Moses (which was given by God through Moses); that is, it has come to have the highest authority there is, the authority that accompanies promulgation by God Himself. One might say that Torah has been expanded, or, better, that Torah has been made more explicit (compare Mt 5:17-48).

A Christian should never think of himself as “free from the Law,” as many do.

When one puts their trust in God, and His Son Yeshua, one is Not Now, “somehow given a license to sin at will”!
(End quote)

Pesach (Passover) is the story of a spiritual journey that spans the ages. A journey from darkness to light.
The Passover Seder (order of service) reflects God's order for how to proceed from spiritual slavery to spiritual freedom.

As we prepare for this experience of personal (and collective) redemption, let us put far from us the leaven (sin) hidden within our hearts.

The Seder (order of service)

The cup of Sanctification

The first step of the Seder is called “Kadesh” Sanctification, to set apart.
The first step in spiritual growth is to want to live a holy life. Sanctification is expressed through committing ourselves to
the will and service of God.
“… I will bring you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians (bondage/slavery)…” Exodus 6:8

Holiness has two aspects: moving away from what is not holy, and moving toward what is holy.
This dual dynamic of “from and toward” is reflected in the four expressions of redemption that God expresses in Exodus 6:6-7, when HE tells Moshe that HE will redeem the Israelites from Egyptian bondage. The expressions, “I will take you out” and “I will rescue you” refers to moving away from bondage. The expressions, “I will redeem you” and “I will take you to Myself,” refers to moving toward God.

The cup of Purification

The second order of service is Urchatz (washing). If one wants holiness, our hands have to be clean. The Psalmist proclaims: “lift up your hands in holiness and bless God”. Our hands carry out our will. One not only has to want holiness (1st order), but our hands (physical actions) must also be holy. Holiness comes down to what we actually do. James 2:18

The cup of Redemption

The third order of service is called “Karpas” represents new life or redemption, created and sustained by Almighty God. Karpas is and essential step in the Seder process because before we advance further, we must be humbled and redeemed. The four questions asked are in fact, statements that are phrased as questions, because a prerequisite for learning anything is to realize that we don't know.

The cup of Acceptance

Yachatz, the fourth order of service involves breaking the middle Matzah. Yachatz shows us that in order for us to truly move toward redemption, some aspects of ourselves has to be broken. The Psalmist (34:19) declares: “God is close to those who are broken hearted”. The voice of a broken heart yearns for help, yearns for something more, it says: 'This isn't where I want to be, I want more'. This type of broken heartedness leads to redemption, a new life and life style.

I Cor 5:6-8, Your boasting is not good. Don't you know the saying, “It takes only a little leaven to leaven a whole
batch of dough? Get rid of the old leaven, so that you can be a new batch of dough, because in reality you are
unleavened. For our Pesach Lamb, the Messiah, has been sacrificed. So let us celebrate the Seder, not with
leftover leaven, the leaven of wickedness and evil, but with the matzah (un-leavened) of purity and truth.

The fifth order of service is called “Maggid” (telling). Speech must be expressive of thought. If we don't think in a holy way, then we can't speak a holy language. A pure mind is at the core of the service of God.

The plagues were administered not as a punishment: but rather to challenge Egyptian society to make moral changes. In the book of Revelation, these plagues are also administered not as a punishment, but rather to challenge society of the day, to make moral changes.

So on and so forth, the Passover Seder moves us toward God's order for how to proceed from spiritual slavery to spiritual freedom. Each segment building upon the other.

I want to encourage you as you partake in the festivals, the appointed times of the LORD (Lev 23), and where Sha'ul (Paul) encourages us to not let anyone pass judgment on us for partaking in these appointed times of God. For these are shadows of things to come and is the body of Messiah. (Col 2:16-17)

Remembrance of the Feast of the LORD, has past, present and future prophetic meaning.

May you have a blessed Pesach as we move toward service of God.

* Definition of “Son of God”…

In Greek/Hellenistic thinking the term son, “huios”, refers basically to physical descent.

In Hebraic thinking the term for son, “ben”, is very different. “Ben” not only designates physical descent and relationship, but it also refers to younger companions, pupils and members of a group, or a “Particular Characteristic”.
Most importantly it means one who belongs to God because of one's righteousness. The angels, as members of the heavenly court are called “sons of God”. Israel is called the “first-born son of God (Ex 4:22). The relationship of God and king is like that of father and son (2 Sam 7:12-14). In Hebraic thought a son was a righteous individual. Messiah was not God's offspring in the sense of a physical child; Yeshua is a son of God because of his righteousness. Yeshua was a “Tzadik” (Righteous one). Yeshua was anointed by God to lead the people to righteousness so that they could be sons and daughters of God. As a son of God, Messiah glorified the Father by turning the people's hearts to God. Matthew identified Yeshua as… the Son of God. When Yeshua asked his disciples who do you say I am? Peter replied, “you are the Messiah, the son of the living God”. (Mt 16:16)
